Quick Takeaways:

  • It’s worth making the most of the next four months and see through your New Year goals.
  • Finding the time to quote isn’t so difficult with the right tools

The summer is drawing to a close and there’s a back-to-school vibe – which interestingly seems to effect most people whether they have school-age children or not? So if you’re feeling newly motivated, following a difficult summer period, you’re not alone.

NEW QUARTER, NEW GOALS

‘September is the new January’ when it comes to setting goals. New habits are often started at ‘natural transition points’. That could be a birthday, first day of the month, the week, the year for instance.

Let’s face it January is long-gone… But if you haven’t got done what you wanted to this year, no problem – that was the old you. This is September and the new you. This is your second shot at progressing the goals and aspirations that were important back in January.

SO HOW DO YOU MAXIMISE THIS POSITIVE MOOD?

To start with, how about scheduling a ‘power hour’ to nail all the little tasks you’ve been putting off. Just blocking out an hour in the diary for an uninterrupted productivity blitz could make all the difference. Once the nagging to-do list is out of your hair you can focus on the bigger thinking.

THE BIG QUESTIONS…

Life coach Melody Wilding, suggests you ask yourself:

  • What’s working best in my life/business right now?
  • What key actions or projects do I want to focus on in the next quarter?
  • What do I still want to achieve this year that I haven’t started?

NEED SOME BUSINESS GOAL INSPIRATION?

How about…

And if that sounds daunting we can make it a whole lot easier…

Camilla Wild is the HBXL Group Sales & Marketing Manager

The summer months are often tricky. You’d think more daylight hours and better weather would mean more building activity, but that’s not always the case.

NOT EVERYONE WAS MAKING HAY WHILE THE SUN SHONE…

  • Customers are away
  • Subbies are either on holiday or go AWOL when the sun comes out
  • Or they find richer pickings with another building firm…
  • The work is backing up
  • And the bills keep coming in.

I’ll stop there. You’ve read enough. Anyway the summer’s pretty much over – it’s all about now and the UK’s fast-approaching exit from Europe.

HOW TO RESPOND…

One of our sales consultants, tongue-in-cheek, said to me the other day, ‘It’s amazing… the harder I work the luckier I get’. You know the score, put in the graft and you’ll reap the rewards.

WHAT’S REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW…

You need to keep turning the wheel. Even if your order book is full for the next 6-9 months – keep on quoting – otherwise you could find yourself seriously short of work next Spring/Summer.

  • Consider the type of projects that make you money
  • Go after them with estimates that you present in good time
  • Estimate on the heavier side if you can’t wait for subbies to give you a price (if ever)
  • And follow up on the quotes
  • Draw up a clear plan for managing your projects
  • Keep your subbies on-side by showing your projections – let them know you’re worth sticking around for
  • In fact keep everyone happy. Reward people for putting in the effort.

American Bobby Unser the famous racing driver from the ‘60s and ‘70s is quoted as saying ‘Success is where preparation and opportunity meet’.

Quick takeaways:

  • HBXL estimating software is less daunting than you think!
  • We’re here to help you every step of the way
  • It’s not about the risk of change – it’s the risk of not changing

Worried about risking time and money on estimating software?

What if you’re actually putting your business at risk by NOT taking the plunge? What if, by delaying, you’re actually costing your business money?

I’ll stop with the dramatic statements. But based on the many, many conversations we have with builders, I’m saying this with good reason. The users of our software are undoubtedly better for having our software than being without it. The changes they have made to their businesses have been positive ones – as evidenced in a recent survey we conducted.

We asked the same questions to both HBXL software and non-users. Their answers were really telling:

  • Builders not benefiting from quotations produced in EstimatorXpress are feeling much less hopeful about business going forward than the builders who are
  • The non-users are more anxious – whilst users are feeling much more positive
  • Margins are getting tighter for both groups – but while non-users are absorbing the price rises – users are still quoting the full amount.

AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR CONCERNS?

Second-guessing them, I’ll say:

  • EstimatorXpress 2019 is our most user-friendly version EVER
  • We’re right by your side as you find your way round the software
  • You can even opt for a free, short, online course giving you tips and tricks
  • The website has bite size ‘getting started’ videos hosted by our lovely trainer Olivia
  • Your Support & Updates package (included in the first year and permanently included with subscriptions) gives you access to the Tech Team over the phone, logged into your computer, via chat and email…Paul Knapp Bristol builder

This is what Paul Knapp, an EstimatorXpress user from Bristol, says about the support team:

“I don’t mind ringing up because people are so helpful. You can feel a bit of an idiot thinking this is really obvious I just can’t see it…but it’s so much easier to talk. It’s knowing that you can ring up and you’re not going to be treated like a bit of a dunce and you’re going to get looked after.”

Why not have a look at our Trustpilot reviews too.

THE ADVANTAGES OF ESTIMATORXPRESS 2019 IN YOUR CORNER

  • You won’t be out of pocket
  • You won’t be absorbing price rises or overlooking hire equipment
  • You’ll know the materials prices are up-to-date
  • You’ll be able to take a view on what are often unknowns, such as what’s profitable and what isn’t, using the software’s clever dashboard
  • You’ll stay on top of the jobs going forward with materials lists, schedules, progress charts and much more
  • You’ll be so well organised! Think of the recommendations!

So apart from your apprehensions about IT (and well done if you don’t have the fear!) what else could be holding you back?

DO YOU NEED MORE INFORMATION?

Apparently, former United States Secretary of State Colin Powell came up with the 40-70 rule: Once you know 40% to 70% of the relevant information, Powell says, that’s enough to guide you toward the best option. “Once the information is in the 40 to 70 range, go with your gut.”

Having less than 40% of the necessary information can lead to errors, while going beyond 70% is too much time spent on fact-finding.

To get to that 40% milestone start by looking round the rest of the website here, you could have a, much recommended, online demonstration with myself or another member of the team. And if you need more time you can even trial the software for 14-days.

Quick takeaways:

  • Subscription is a cashflow friendly option for accessing our award-winning estimating software
  • An outright purchase of a lifetime licence gives you perpetual use of our software

There’s no right or wrong answer. HBXL Building Software offers both subscription and lifetime licence on all its products. And that includes EstimatorXpress 2019 our leading estimating software. After all, it depends on your circumstances and personal requirements. Here we take a quick look at the options to help you make a considered decision.

WHY HBXL BUILDING SOFTWARE SUBSCRIPTION?

  • No capital expenditure – a lower upfront cost compared to lifetime licence – useful for cash flow
  • Fixed price for the duration of your annual subscription so even if the software prices increases during that time you don’t pay any extra – whereas monthly subscription schemes have been known to up the price one month to the next…
  • The fee includes the Support & Updates package – so one less thing to think about.

And a long list of helpful extras with subscription:

  • Free second installation – you can access your estimates on a second PC/Laptop as its backs up to a cloud location of your choice.
  • Priority booking on our Software Skills courses
  • Exclusive discounts on estimating services and further software subscriptions you take out
  • Early access to new releases
  • Free on-boarding session for up to an hour with the tech team (on a first come, first served basis)
  • FREE one-hour business coaching with our partners at BBG. They’ll give you sound advice about your business strategy. They will also give you feedback from 6 previous customers.

Of course if you stop the subscription you no longer have access to your estimates or other documents…

HBXL BUILDING SOFTWARE LIFETIME LICENCE

Lifetime, perpetual, yours forever whatever you want to call it!

  • The software will always be yours – it’ll never be switched off!
  • The upfront investment can work out cheaper than making ongoing payments
  • So long as your computer can operate the software you will always be able to access your documents

A couple of things to bear in mind with a lifetime licence…

You will need to renew your Support & Updates package after the first twelve months, and again every year-on-year in order to access the regular software updates. It also entitles you to all the award-winning over-the-phone and email support from the Tech Team. The charge is a small outlay for the help and new features you will receive.

If you choose not to pay the renewal cost and continue to use an ageing version of HBXL software, eventually there’s every chance it won’t work effectively. Regular materials price updates is one of the key features of EstimatorXpress for instance. We keep abreast of any legislative changes that would effect Health & Safety Xpert – which makes Support & Updates crucial. We could go on…

EstimatorXpress 2019, PlansXpress 2019, Health & Safety Xpert 2019, ContractsXpert 2019, ProjectXpert 2019, plus our bundles are all available on a lifetime licence or a 12 or 24-month subscription. So subscription or lifetime licence? Talk it through with the team on 0117 916 7898 or go online here.

Health & Safety Xpert 2019

BBC News released a video about the alarming prevalence of mental illness among men in the construction industry in the United Kingdom. Long hours, lack of job security and macho atmosphere are blamed for the high risk of suicide – three times higher than the national average for men. Like many in the industry, Adrian Wild, Managing Director of HBXL Building Software is very concerned by the current statistics on stress, mental health and wellbeing.

“It is crucial that the construction industry creates a culture on site, whether it’s a loft extension or a whole development, where people feel safe enough to talk about their feelings and get support if they need it.

“That’s why we’ve introduced the new ‘Work Stress and Mental Health’ Toolbox Talk in Health & Safety Xpert 2019.”

So how do we know if someone is experiencing stress for instance?

SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR OF STRESS IN A COLLEAGUE ON SITE OR IN THE OFFICE

  • reduced productivity, appearing distracted
  • appearing overwhelmed
  • lacking in self-confidence
  • isolation from work colleagues and friends
  • increased conflict with co-workers
  • increased lateness, absenteeism and presenteeism (showing up to work, but not being able to function properly)
  • reduced problem-solving ability

(Taken from our newest Toolbox Talk which is included in Health & Safety Xpert 2019)

Stress isn’t the only form of Mental Ill Health, it includes anxiety, depression, phobic anxiety orders and obsessive compulsive orders.

It is also important to know that Mental Ill Heath is classed as a disability under the Equality Act 2010 which makes it unlawful for an employer to treat a disabled person less favourably without a justifiable reason.

Stress of course is normal, but too many stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol can be harmful when we don’t need them. It’s not healthy or practical to go into ‘fight or flight’ mode every five minutes.

Q. So what do you say to someone who is displaying any of the signs?

A. Start with ‘How’s it going?’

Q. What do you do if you’re experiencing stress?

A. Ask for help. Take care of yourself outside of work, including exercise and eating well.

There is a full list of recommendations and suggestions  in the new ‘Work Stress and Mental Health’ Toolbox Talk in Health & Safety Xpert 2019. It’s a handy tool to start a conversation on site with everyone assembled. (There is more information on Toolbox Talks and what they are, further down the page).

HEALTH & SAFETY XPERT 2019

Health & Safety Xpert 2019 has over 70 Toolbox Talks, and alongside these, the software has all the documents to keep you in line with the latest regulations and CDM 2015 compliant: Risk and COSHH Assessments, Company Health & Safety Policy, Method Statements, Pre-Construction Info, Construction Phase Health & Safety Plans, Health & Safety File, Site Inspections and more, including 35+ Management documents! Take a look at our Health & Safety Xpert gallery to see a range of sample reports.

Health & Safety Xpert 2019 costs just £699+VAT and is very easy to use. In fact the software in itself is a known stress-buster! If you want to get your health and safety sorted on site, reduce worry and avoid HSE fines then the software will help save time and effort, all whilst reducing risks on site. Health & Safety Xpert 2019 provides all the documents needed for each stage of the HSE’s recommended approach to managing health and safety. And it can be achieved in minutes!

For more information give us a call on 0117 916 7898, read more here, or ask for an online demonstration.

WHAT IS A TOOLBOX TALK?

Fundamentally, each ‘toolbox talk’ is a short presentation to the workforce on a single aspect of health and safety, and takes place before a specific task is going to be carried out. Each one is designed to heighten awareness.

And even if there isn’t anything out of the ordinary happening that day you should still use one or more of the Toolbox Talks on a daily basis to promote a culture of health and safety, to prompt a discussion between you all, run through emergency procedures, explore the risks and think about ways of dealing with them.

Although they don’t replace health and safety training, they’re a good reminder and effectively there to reinforce what your workforce should know already. 10-15 minutes well spent.

HOW DO YOU USE A TOOLBOX TALK?

  1. Simply print the document off (it’s probably worth have a read through beforehand).
  2. If it relates to a piece of equipment, then have it to hand
  3. Choose a quiet spot on site where there aren’t any distractions so that everyone can concentrate for those few minutes.
  4. Read it out to everyone.
  5. Use the prop to demonstrate your points either during or after the talk. For instance if the talk is on abrasive wheels, show the grinder and point to the relevant safety features
  6. Open it up for discussion, encourage questions – however basic they might be.
  7. Make a note of the date of the talk, the subject and who was in attendance. It’s good protocol and proof if needed for the HSE. Please note, Health & Safety Xpert provides a Toolbox Talks Register for recording who’s received what talk.

Make the Toolbox Talk part of the daily routine, and alongside the briefing, you could take the opportunity with everyone gathered round, to run through any housekeeping matters or issues with the job, be they material hold-ups, or changes to the plans.

To see where the Toolbox Talks sit within the process of managing health and safety, as per the HSE’s ‘Managing for Health & Safety’ (HSG65) document, take a look at our guide. This useful pdf file matches the documents with the four stages within HSG65, ‘Plan, Do, Check, Act’. Anything you don’t understand, just talk to one of our team.

For more information give us a call on 0117 916 7898, read more here, or ask for an online demonstration.

Some concerning statistics from the CITB about Mental Ill Health

Over 2 million people report suffering an illness they believe has been caused or made worse by their work. This can take the form of stress, anxiety, back pain, depression and increased risk of coronary heart disease.

Every year three in ten employees experience mental health problems.

By 2020 depression will rank second to heart disease as the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Quick takeaways:

  • Green light for more extensions with our estimating software
  • Homeowners can now builder larger extensions on their properties without the need for a full planning application
  • You can choose an extensions template, add your dims, tweak your specification and resources, and have a quote in less than 30 minutes.

How many of the 110,000 extensions that the government has reported were completed from 2014 onwards were built by you? Not enough? Then be ready to respond to new interest from homeowners now that the government have made temporary rules permanent ones under the new Permitted Development right.

And we’re ready to help you make this most of this new ruling. EstimatorXpress 2019 estimating software has hundreds of templates for single storey hip, apex, flat roof and lean-to extensions (including wraparounds) – with countless permutations of roofs, wall finishes, flooring and internal fitting out.

SMARTER THAN YOUR AVERAGE ESTIMATING SOFTWARE

Once you’ve chosen your extension, all the software needs is a handful of dimensions based on any specification preferences and unique labour, plant and materials prices. EstimatorXpress will then cost the entire building in minutes (approx. 30 minutes for an extension) and give you a quote in a single click. You even get an analysis of your projects via useful reports and graphs automatically.

The Government’s announcement means homeowners now have the certainty to make plans to add a single-storey rear extension on their property of up to 6 metres for terraced or semi-detached homes, or 8 metres for detached homes.

Housing Minister Kit Malthouse MP said, “These measures will help families extend their properties without battling through time-consuming red tape. By making this permitted development right permanent, it will mean families can grow without being forced to move.”

Speed up your response times, improve your accuracy, protect your profit and take a look at EstimatorXpress 2019. Your competition will – if they haven’t already…

Quick takeaways:

  • HSE inspection initiative – focus on occupational lung disease caused by asbestos, silica, wood and other dusts
  • New Health & Safety Xpert gives everything you need for your general building works compliance in one package – including documents relating to this latest initiative

Starting on 17 June, the HSE will be carrying out its latest construction inspection initiative. This initiative will continue the focus on health, in particular the measures in place to protect workers from occupational lung disease caused by asbestos, silica, wood and other dusts when carrying out common construction tasks.

Priority is often given to safety but thousands more workers suffer ill-health at work than are harmed by at-work accidents. Asbestos and dust are ‘slow killers’. HSE estimates that annually there are around 8,000 work-related cancer deaths a year. The construction industry accounts for around 3,500 of these with asbestos and silica the major causes. Construction businesses and workers need to be aware of how dangerous and hazardous to someone’s health such substances can be.

HSE inspectors will be looking to ensure those involved with construction projects know the risks, properly plan their work and use the right controls.

Where poor standards are found, enforcement action will be taken.

HOW TO BE INSPECTION-READY

Are you ready for a surprise visit from the HSE? Putting fines and shutdowns aside, ‘just’ a Fee for Intervention is an unwelcome setback. The hourly fee is now £127 and the average cost of an invoice is in the region of £675 (often for what you may consider fairly minor “offences” such as a fuse gone in the site cabin hot water boiler…muddy/slippery steps to the cabin…or no bin for waste!).

Health & Safety Xpert 2019 is a clever CDM 2015 compliant software that helps you stay within the law without having to do loads of form-filling or wade through masses of paperwork. Up-to-the-minute, industry-standard documents have been written with leading experts to make sure you keep everyone on site safe and ready for any HSE inspection.

Among the many important documents, it includes Toolbox Talks, a Permit to Work Asbestos, relevant Risk Assessments, COSHH Assessments including two useful documents to help you meet your obligations;

• EH 40. This is a HSE publication containing a list of workplace exposure limits for use with the COSHH Regulations 2002

• Risk and Safety Phrases. This is a list which contains details of special risks attributed to dangerous substances and preparations, together with safety advice.

Health & Safety Xpert is easy to use. It identifies the relevant paperwork for each job. It cuts down the time it would take by hand and at a fraction of the cost of a health and safety consultant. And MASSIVELY cheaper than an HSE fine! To find out more about these important software solution, give a member of the HBXL team a call on 0117 9167898, leave us an email or follow the links to get started with a trial or a live online demonstration.

You know the analogy “you wait ages for a bus then two come a long at once”, well such is the journey with PlansXpress. This is what happens when you leave our development team in a darkened room!

Bus No.1

First came PlansXpress v.5. This was a really important step for the software as in techno speak “we moved the underlying core platform of PlansXpress (Teigha for anyone interested!) on to a newer version.”

Why is this important? PlansXpress 2019Teigha is actually a very powerful engine and by moving PlansXpress onto the very latest, it means that we can now add new features and functionality to the software more easily so you should see lots more exciting stuff coming your way. Bus No.2

Secondly is our long anticipated release PlansXpress 2019. The team have been beavering away on this and there is lots of “good stuff” to come in this launch.

  • Improved PDF import
  • New Import Ribbon & Wizard for importing drawings such as PDFs/other CAD files to streamline the process
  • Faster placement of floors/ceilings with the 'new' one click room tracer - identifies rooms
  • Improved Context Menu (new features to Middle click)

  • Improved Print Preview
  • New Intelli-trace for levels: automatically overlay walls from the level above and/or below, these overlays can be snapped to and used as a guide when placing entities
  • Updates to the Symbol library (increased insertion points for some symbols).

If you have the latest PlansXpress with up-to-date Support & Updates you can simply download. Otherwise you will either need to renew or upgrade. If you need to check what you should be doing then speak to Shannyn or Joe on 0117 916 7892.

If you'd like to see what is in the different versions check out the PlansXpress version comparison table.

And if you haven't yet bought the software, the standard PlansXpress v.5 is £799+VAT or for £998+VAT (until 31.7.18) you can have the Ultimate with the 3D PhotoVisualiser.

Why not test drive the software and check it out yourself? Arrange it here.
